Maybe scruffy tattooed str8 guys from the 80's isn't your scene, but ya gotta appreciate all the years of hard work David Hurles put into photographing, videotaping, and audiotaping these men. I was thinking about this because a fellow eBay seller, retrorevivals, has a handful of these videotapes for sale (I've bought from, and sold to this great eBayer), and figured I'd throw together a bunch of random pics. Mr. Hurles himself occasionally still sells on eBay (search for seller DHURLES), but his website Old Reliable.com seems to have been this blank page for years now - what's with that? You can find some info at this old badpuppy page, but if you are really serious about seeing some of this man's work - my pals at BIJOU VIDEO have craploads of his stuff on their site. Some brief background info is only the beginning - they've also managed to load a bazillion pages from the OLD RELIABLE CATALOGUES, and if you hunt around enough, you'll even find the e-postcards, which you can send with not only a nekkid str8 man, but also with dirty audio clips! And of course, they don't do this just out of the goodness of their hearts (although if you've ever corresponded with them, you know they are interested in preserving our porn history) they do have some OLD RELIABLE stuff for sale, so check that out, too.

I realized earlier today that I hadn't left my apartment in 36 hours! Fortunately, I had some errands that had to be done, so I got some fresh air. Meanwhile, I've been scanning some flyers and video boxes for some more porno auctions. These are from a company called Old Reliable. Old Reliable is/was pretty much a one-man operation (David something) which begun in the late 60's/early 70's. Initially still photography, he branched out into audio, and video tapes (I don't know if he ever did film). What I have are video tapes that I believe are from the mid-80's, as they seem to match up with what I've found in a BIJOU Video Catalogue.

The videos were usually taped in a private Los Angeles home, and include a wide range of men: White/black/latin; skinny/muscled; scruffy/tatooed/cigar-chomping; while some had done str8 or gay porn before the OLD RELIABLE taping, and some have done it since, most were amatuer guys, and the interest in them was becasue many had the "rough trade" look. Most are supposed to be straight, and pose for the cameraman, who encourages as much exhibitionism, including whacking off, of course, as possible. What is unique about these, besides being one of the earliest "Amatuer" style videos, is that the models talk about themselves, sometimes with prodding from the cameraman, and you usually see each model from his initial posing clothed, as he takes off his clothes, etc. The funny thing is, I had heard about them years ago, and the whole str8/rough trade thing didn't appeal to me at all. But watching, it's interesting to see some of these guys actually having fun, and the guy in the picutre, besides his great body, he's quite playful, and "mock poses" in the mirror after he cums, giggles, and has this great "aww shucks" demeanor that is quite attractive (and that cock bouncing around as he laughs ain't too bad, either!)

Old Reliable

If you've been reading me for awhile, you know I sell porno videos on eBay. I'm posting the last few Old Reliable tapes, including the one where this quickie clip is taken. I did managed to save a bunch of stills that I made for the auctions, which I hope to one day post on a separate page (but please, don't hold your breath - she's still waiting for a Bjork disc I promised 6 weeks ago, and he's still waiting for the AVI of Dallesandro I promised god-knows-when). Falconhead Two: THE MANEATERS

There are many of us who fault the VCR and cheap commercial videotape technology for the downfall of the quality of the gay porno industry. But before videotape became the format for movie-making, there was a brief period in the early/mid 80's when the new markets for selling videotapes (remember, they were going for 70-120 bucks 20+ years ago!) meant at least in some cases, the additional revenue meant more money spent for the actual production of the films. Here is an excellent example of the bigger budget films, directed by Michael Zen, who's hypnotic music and fantastic cinematography created an erotic, sensual feel seldom realized in the sleazy movie houses these films were often seen in.

Paul Barresi does a typical (for him) solo jerk-off performance, but the quality of the lighting, sound, and editing give it a more highly charged feel. (And unlike most of his appearances in gay films, he actually intereacts with one of the other characters, Rick Taylor - in this case to set up the premise of the film). Another solo, by newcomer Blake Palmer (who has a similar performance in Steve Scott's Screen Play through a motel window, and who later went on to str8 videos) - is beautifully photographed as he slowly undresses, jerks off, all the while being photographed (as it turns out, by himself) with an erotic voice-over. Brad Mason (who you've also seen in Jobsite and One In A Billion), mustached and tattooed, looking like one of the better Old Reliable models, has two performances in this film - first with Paul Monroe, a highly charged suck and fuck scene by a fireplace; then in a butler fantasy with Steve Collins (who you'll remember form such other films as I Do, Gayracula, and Non-Stop), first as the servant, then the roles are flipped, and Collins is the servant, and fucked while almost completely wrapped in Saran Wrap (it may sound funny, but Mason's cock going into Collin's ass will have a very different effect on you, I guarantee it).

Michael Zen first came on the gay porn scene in 1972 with the first Falconhead film, an incredibly trippy, sexy film. Until this 1983 film, I can't find what he's done film-wise. Since then, he's done a couple gay pornos in the 80's, many many str8 pornos, and seems to be doing both gay and str8 videos today. I remember enjoying He-Devils back in 1990, surprised at the look and feel of the video at a time when "cinematography" was a foreign word in gay porno making (highly recommended for any Michael Brawn, Alex Stone, or Lon Flexx fan). Also of note is his 1988 video - G. I. Mac - another Paul Barresi solo (the sequence shows him with his gun, then jerking off thinking about other men in his platoon) plus a great Brian Adams solo - the music, the blue-tinged lighting, the cigarette smoke, and the camera lingering over his body add up to a great opening sequence; and also a great Brian Adams - Butch Taylor lovemaking scene.

Back to this film, Falconhead Two - another HIS chopped up video - currently only the 65 minute version is commercially available. I don't recall who did the music, but it's definately a highlight, one of the rare films that understands the proper use of sound to elicit a sexual response. Obviously I'm on the lookout for the full 86 minute version, which was available on videotape in the 80's.

These are just some stills from these "amateur" videos by Bobby Garcia. His work is sort of in the lines of Old Reliable and Dirk Yates - that west coast give a str8 guy a beer and a few bucks and he'll whack it for ya genre. Doesn't really work for me, but it's still fascinating to watch these. Some say Garcia only released these for commerical use when he needed some dough for legal fees when the Marines went after him; otherwise they were made just for his personal enjoyment. He's often in the frame, either just walking past the guy(s) to get to the bathroom, or to wipe up a mess on a guy's stomach, and yes, he does try to get some of the action, when he can coax them into it (that's his ass in the last frame). Sometimes you can even hear him off-camera on the phone, while the camera is rolling and some guy is trying to get hard and do his jack-off scene! I hope to post the 2 tapes I have on eBay this weekend.
